There are many variations about the myths and stories behind these deities. Hindus worshiped a large number of personal gods, called Ishvaras. These gods are worshiped as murtis, or divine spirits, and are powerful entities that are otherwise called devas. Each of these are depicted as humanoids and are unique in their own way, with their own set of complex iconography.
